I had an interesting experience at a recent meeting with a local government agency. The subject of purchasing Internet and advanced communication services came up and the customer mentioned that of course they wanted to go with a tier-one carrier. This got me thinking as to the technical definition of a tier-one carrier and the often confusing public perceptions of its meaning.

Cisco Switch Power Deny Issue with Polycom Phones
We ran into a rather bizarre problem a while back with a VoIP installation. The installation consisted of a cisco 3560 48-port PoE switch feeding 35 Polycom phones. Impulse is a network service provider serving primarily the United States. From time to time we have clients with a global presence who need to offer integrated voice services to remote offices. This document describes configuration of the Adtran Total Access 900 series to allow foreign telephone numbers to be directed to a Broadsoft or other SIP softswitch in these cases.
